It’s never been easier to create your own website. You don’t need to hire a professional designer or programmer. But creating a good website, that’s a different story.
Here are five must-haves for building your website.
1. Mobile optimisation
According to Stats NZ, in June 2017, New Zealand had 3.8 million phones with active internet connections, an increase of 11 percent since 2016. See the Stats NZ report
That why it's more important than ever that your site looks good on phone screens. After all, it's your business’s display window. Most website platforms will make sure your site is responsive. But if you built your website more than a few years ago, it might be worth revisiting your design.
2. Fast load time
When a website won't load, people get frustrated. We’re talking one to two seconds – it doesn’t take long for people to give up on a site. Usually, the more widgets you have on the page, the slower it will load. Make sure you only have what's essential.
3. Browser compatibility
Your site might look great on your browser, but terrible on others. The only way to make sure users are getting a consistent experience is to test your site on the most popular browsers. Before launching your site, recruit family and friends to help you check it across Internet Explorer, Microsoft Edge, Chrome, Firefox and Safari.
4. "Clickable" phone numbers
Imagine somebody searching for your business on their phone. Once they get to your site, they might want to call the listed number. So make sure your phone number is “clickable” – that is, customers can tap the number to call. This saves customers from writing it down on the back of their hand, copying and pasting or even trying to remember it. Make your phone number clickable by using standard formatting, for example, 0800 123 456 or +64 027 123 4567.
New customers visit your site to make sure your business can deliver on its promises. They expect a professional site with high-quality information. Nothing will build their confidence more than endorsements from past and current customers. Make sure you publish good (and real) testimonials and update them often.
