Keeping up with developments in online tools and digital technology can give you a competitive edge, and help you survive and thrive in today's fast changing business environment.

How to stay ‘up to date’
There is now a vast amount of information available to help you stay up-to-date with online tools and digital technology. It can quickly get overwhelming. We recommend finding a handful of good information sources that you trust and that provide relevant information for your business or industry. It is also a good idea to set aside a little regular reading time to review the information you collect - keeping an eye out for new ideas or tools that would help you improve your business.

Business related government agencies can be a useful source of information and often include information from other trusted online and digital experts. Search the key word 'digital' at www.business.govt.nz for a range of articles and advice. New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE) also has a large number of articles and videos on digital and technology trends impacting business internationally on its website. New content is normally included in their free e-newsletters.

Some Telecommunications and technology companies provide up-to-date technology and digital resources and information. For example, www.sparklab.co.nz contains a range of tools, videos and articles. Ask your current IT or  telecommunications provider/s if they offer any regularly updated information.

Industry and business associations often provide information on new tools and technologies in their e-newsletters and website news-feeds. For example, RetailNZ's publication The Register has a specific technology section. Many Chamber's of Commerce also provide information and updates on technology to their members.

Innovation, technology and business publications such as Idealog and Computerworld are very good and provide free e-newsletters. The Innovation Partnership also provides a weekly summary on technology news.

News Websites and Apps often have specialist technology sections and coverage of the latest developments internationally. Take a look through the technology sections of the BBC, CNN, The New Zealand Herald or Stuff etc.

LinkedIn can be a valuable resource. LinkedIn groups cover a wide range of industries with many providing regular updates, and sharing news about relevant technologies.

Social Media is a great place for sharing ideas and joining conversations. Search for and ‘like’ or ‘follow’ relevant industry groups on Facebook and Twitter.

Attending business related technology events such as Tech Week can be an excellent way to keep in touch with what's happening in the  online world and technology.  They are a great place to discover new products. Supplier stands, demonstrations and presentations at these events can provide lots of relevant information and a chance to learn about new technologies. Start by researching events relevant to your industry and planning your attendance in advance.
